"We live by the 'work hard, play hard' philosophy!" Where's the last place you'd expect to find a bunch of guys who sell boats for a living? If you guessed on the top of a freezing mountain, you'd be right! But that didn't stop a group of POP Yachts employees from taking on California's Mammoth Mountain earlier this year. The trip was a melding of team building, reveling and a little machismo thrown in for good measure, too. "Our goal was to do some major skiing and snowboarding, but Mother Nature did not cooperate with the snow conditions," says Scott McNally, licensed employing broker. "We were able to do a good amount of skiing and boarding on the manmade snow, but more importantly we were able to get in some quality Après Ski bonding." And let's face it, most of the crew from sunny Sarasota, Fla., were fine with a more relaxed pace. "With some/most of us being a little exhausted and out of shape, we spent most nights hanging out in the cabin watching movies," McNally concedes. "Of course, we also found time to get a little work in as our operations never stop." With much of POP Yachts' 192 staff members dispersed throughout the country, having some face-to-face interaction is always important, particularly for the remote staff. "We work together on a day-to-day basis, but we don't see each other, so we communicate through Skype or email," says Kevin Stigall, licensed senior broker who is located in Placerville, Calif., and who also joined the ski trip. "It's really important for everybody to get together in person to relax and get away from the day-to-day. I love working from home ... but you get a little bit of cabin fever." So, our readers really want to know: What sort of shenanigans went on during the ski trip? "We were all sworn to secrecy regarding the trip, so I cannot disclose too much," McNally says. But we did find out the designated driver, senior broker Nathan Hawk, hit an ice patch on the road and spun the van around. "That's what we get for having a Southern boy as a driver!" When they're not risking life and limb on an icy mountain, the POP Yachts team gets together for planning sessions, like the annual conference, and more informal activities like happy hours, bowling nights, company softball games, holiday parties and more. "At POP Yachts, we live by the 'work hard, play hard' philosophy,” McNally says. "As far as future trips, we are looking into possibly doing a cruise for our top performers later this year. More to come on that!" Pictured above, in the warmth of a Mammoth Mountain bar: Standing: Mike Lewis, Nicholas Owens, Scott McNally and Kevin Stigall.
