It shouldn't be lost on boating industry enthusiasts that while Cruisers Yachts may have resisted the move from wooden boats to fiberglass, the company eventually evolved ... and did so quite effectively.Cruisers Yachts origins go back to 1904 when Chris Thompson co-founded the Thompson Bros. Boat Manufacturing Company. It wasn't until 1953 that Chris' sons followed in their father's footsteps as the second generation of boat builders, working in Oconto, WI. They started by building wooden cabin cruisers, and by 1959, the brothers were constructing 3,000 boats each year.By 1965, although they still believed in well-crafted wooden boats, the Thompsons moved into the fiberglass realm, due to market demands. After some turbulence through the 1990s, K. C. Stock's firm KCS International purchased the Thompsons' company and renamed it Cruisers Yachts. But even with all those changes, Cruisers Yachts stuck to its proverbial guns when it came to quality construction and innovation by pairing state-of-the-art technology with intricate handcraftsmanship. For instance, when working with fiberglass, Cruisers marries fiberglass parts with other components, using a guided masking system and a polyester bonding paste. The company also uses CAD/CAM technology to ensure that all components are precisely manufactured. A computer-controlled C-N-C machine also ensures exact fabrication of cabinets, countertops, wood trim and more for a perfect, secure fit.Additionally, an advanced wax gelcoat is used on all Cruisers Yachts' bilge areas, ensuring less damage and scuffing. The hull of each vessel is hand sanded to eliminate excess wax. That's followed by a primer and then Sea Hawk Cukote, an advanced black finish that's harder than most, self-polishing and withstands the effects of the water as well as long-term docking. The woodwork in Cruisers boats is also a complement of tradition, like wenge and cherry hard wood, paired with modern solid panel design finished in a contemporary high-gloss.At POP Yachts, we list dozens of Cruisers in our listings, like the fully loaded and ultra sleek-looking 1999 Cruisers 3375 pictured above.Take a look through our Cruisers listings and contact us today so we can help you find the well-constructed, modern vessel you've been searching for.
