We can think of no greater shame than Century Boats not making it to a century in business, with that 100-year anniversary just 12 short years from now. Thankfully, after some dark days through the 2000s, Century Boats is seeing an impressive resurgence in the industry. Brothers James and William Welch founded Century Boats in 1926 in Milwaukee. Two years later they moved the operation to Michigan where they built boats for 60 years. Even with some of their earliest vessels, Century Boats became known for their speed, a reputation it still enjoys today. Like many other boat manufacturers of the time, Century built World War II vessels for the Army and Navy. In the 1960s, Century transitioned from wooden boats to fiberglass, along with the rest of the industry. The company remained strong for the next couple of decades and was eventually sold to General Marine and later to Yamaha along with Cobia boats. Yamaha sold Cobia in 2005 to focus on the Century line, but at the end of 2009, dropped production of the Century line of boats, too. It wasn't until 2012 that Yamaha finally sold Century to Allcraft Marine, an American company in Dade City, FL, which relocated the company to Zephyrhills, FL. Today, Century Boats offers walk arounds, center consoles and inshore boats and has plans to introduce an express model at the upcoming Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, according to Century Boats' website. Some of Century's recent innovations include a power command center, iPod connections and a variety of other electrical options. Over the years, Century has been known for building fast, fun, well-built fishing boats that are ideal for solo or day trips. Since Century is a company with so many years under its belt, it's no surprise that the brokerage market is chockfull of used Century Boats options, from stunning antique finds like the 1955 Century 20 Coronado pictured above to a 2008 Century 3200 center console, complete with a 10-year hull warranty. Those are just two of dozens of Century Boats available in the POP Yachts' listings. Take a look through what's available today, and give us a call at (941) 257-0111 so we can help you find the contemporary or antique Century boat you've been dreaming about. And if you happen to know anyone at Century Boats headquarters, tell them we'd love an invite to their 100th anniversary celebration. That's one party we don't want to miss, and a milestone we're confident the company will hit!
